Happy Halloween!

Halloween is the #1 overlooked “holiday” in divorce agreements.

Are YOU a Terrible Parent?

Food, shelter and clothing are necessities and while providing them is the minimum, doing so alone does not make you a great parent.

  • Do you encourage a relationship between the child and the other parent?
    • Just NOT badmouthing them does not make you a great parent. You should encourage and promote a good relationship.  Oh, and it’s required when parties have joint legal custody.
  • Do you withhold financial support from your child?
    • Money isn’t everything, but there is no excuse for not supporting your child.
  • Do you degrade the other parent to your child?
    • “I don’t lie to my child!” 1) Yes, you do. Everyday, to protect them. 2) Telling them how big a scoundrel the other parent is hurts the child. Half of their identity is from that scoundrel!
  • Do you prevent your child from seeing the other parent or interfere with the visitation?
    • Out of sight is NOT out of mind. Absence can make the heart grow fonder…

Matthew Thompson is a Child Custody Lawyer in Mississippi and reminds you to not be a terrible parent.

Happy Halloween!

Boo!

It’s Halloween.  A day of costumes, candy and having fun. Often, Halloween is not addressed in the divorced parent’s papers. It is after all, not a “real” holiday. However, I usually include Halloween in custody schedules.

While not a real holiday, it is nonetheless an important day in your child’s life. From picking out the costume to sneaking a Reese’s, memories are certainly made and then cherished.

Have a safe and happy Halloween!

Don’t Play Games

It’s all fun and games until somebody gets hurt.

I’m not talking about playing with your children.  Too often I see adults playing games with the other parent’s time. It’s not a game. It’s not really even the other parent’s time. It’s the children’s.

It is also painful when the lawyer is playing games too. Advocating for your client is not making it as costly and long as possible. It’s not arguing over everything. It’s not agreeing to one thing and then doing another.

If this post sounds like you, it’s not too late to change. Be a decent parent. Be a decent lawyer. Be a decent human being. And if you are still going to play games, join a soccer team.

Matthew Thompson is a Family Lawyer and is mildly irritated by people sometimes.

Happy Father’s Day

“I believe that what we become depends on what our fathers teach us at odd moments, when they aren’t trying to teach us. We are formed by little scraps of wisdom.”

Take Your Kids to the Theatre

The movies are fine, but I’m talking about live action theatre.

There’s something really amazing and endearing about witnessing a live performance. Watching the story come to life in three dimensions is an experience that even the highest definition cannot capture.

The Lion King, Peter Pan, The Little Mermaid or Mary Poppins, it does not matter. Broadway or a high school production, all offer something to enjoy.

You don’t have to be highfalutin or in a tux and tales to enjoy. And in my experience your kids rise to the occasion and really enjoy it!

Going to Bat for Your…Ex!? – Things Great Parents Do Whether they Like it or Not.

Ex-spouses.  The scourge of happy families.

Despising your ex is a “fundamental right” that most divorcees have earned. Usually, about half of the time, the ex deserves it. However, there are some involved who do not.  The children.

Promoting and encouraging a good relationship between your ex and the children is usually a very good thing.  You should do it.  How, you ask?

Go to Bat for the Other Parent.

If the child indicates they don’t want to go to visitation or that they would rather go to Jenny’s birthday, don’t acquiesce.  Tell them how important it is to go see the other parent. Tell them how much that time means to the other parent. Tell them how much fun they will have.  Even if you don’t believe it.

Think about if the roles were reversed.  Jenny’s birthday is not that important to your child. It’s just another school friend’s birthday. Time with the Other Parent is Priceless.

Forgettable Halloween!

Halloween is not a “real” holiday.  School is not out, banks are not closed, the Post Office still does their thing.

IMG_5209

Halloween is also overlooked in Child Custody Visitation Agreements.  It is not in the Court’s “standard” visitation schedule.  Also, Halloween is a moving target.  It’s not always a weekend.  Due to this it can result in one parent “having” the holiday more than the other and the other parent’s “rights” dependent solely on the whim of the calendar.  Sometimes this is not a problem when mom and dad get along, but sometimes this is used against the other parent.  Put Halloween in your papers if you have young children.  It’s a fun day and a special time!

Matthew Thompson is a Child Custody/Visitation lawyer in Mississippi and warns that if you don;t want to be scared on whether or not you have rights to Halloween visitation, it is best to put it in your papers.
